Hazard tree falling stuff here

In 'principles of hazard tree risk management' it says of the 306 deaths on a Wildfire 1990-2006: 1. Vehicle accidents- 71, 2. Heart Attacks- 67, 3. Aircraft Accidents- 69, 4.Burnovers- 64,

5. Miscellaneous -17 6. Falling Snags/Rocks -11, 7. Other Medical 7

I learned a lot at Chainsaw school, makes me wonder why I never looked it up on the internet 'til now. Can't find the 212 manual.

Firewise newsletters

To save these videos, type the words 'about:cache' in Firefox's address area, you'll get a page with something like this on it somewhere-

C:\Users\hike1\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\m7yc1i5x.default\Cache

Copy and paste that into Explorer (windows, not internet) and you'll see a bunch of gibberish files with no .flv's, after the filenames. images/fire_train/about_cache.jpg
images/fire_train/right_click.jpg
The '.flv's will be megabytes, just select, right click 'rename' , the file will blink, just type .flv on the end, images/fire_train/flv.jpg
then view with VLC video lan player, www.videolan.org/vlc/, why this is a big hassle is beyond me. If your computer power goes out or Firefox crashes, all of the cache contents gets deleted, so don't delay if you want to save any .flv's.

Update, February 2012, there's an add-on for Firefox 10 called flash and video download, haven't tried it though. Firefox 10 puts every one of your cache files in it's own directory and I need Locate32 to find the files that are between 2 and 20 MB, usually flash.

Hydraulics by Brian Simington of Mayer Fire he might send you the powerpoint http://www.mayerfire.com images/fire_train/bill_simington.jpg

My notes, no warranty as to fitness or accuracy and no liability if the info is wrong!

brush trucks rated @125 PSI (pounds per square inch)

Type1 GPM (gallons per minute)

100% 150 PSI on a 1.5" hose

1 cu. ft. of water weighs 6.25 lbs. Pressure is perpendicular to walls of container.

Normal pressure-pressures below atmospheric pressure 14.7 pounds per square inch.

Vacuum is measured in inches of mercury. 29.9 inches of mercury is normal at sea level.

static pressure- when water is not moving

residual pressure- remaining at source while water is flowing

Sea level atmospheric pressure forces water to height of 33.9

psi drops .5 per 1000 feet

1 psi raises water 2.3 feet

5 psi raises water 12 feet 5 psi per story

going downhill-lower your pressure

Walker type 1 truck will do 750 GPM with a 2.5 inch line

most of our lines are 1.5 inches

1000 feet downhill you need to restrict flow, turn down gated y

If you can collapse hose with your foot you need to up the pressure.

back presser-60 ft taller- 60x.434=30 feet of psi greater

Master stream-<300 GPM standard psi 80

for greater reach-100 psi, over 80 psi hose will bounce around

Nozzle pressure 65 psi hand line, fog nozzle 100 psi

Structure-95 gpm, nozzle to 125, 200 max.

2.5 inch nozzle will do 200 GPM, fog nozzle does a fine spray

friction-water rubbin on the interior of the hose.

100 feet of 2.5 inch hose 7 psi friction loss

200 14

psi has no effect on fricton loss, it's the diameter of hose and speed.

FL=c time q squared times L

fl-friction loss

c-friction loss coefficient

q squared-discharge in GPM

L-length of hose

critical velocity-stream is agitated by resistance

3 inch hose is 4 times larger than a 1.5 inch.

July 9, 2011, Roger has split the firefighters into factions to more properly reflect the Walker community.

Ha, just kidding, each squad is going to care for a vehicle or 2, Squad leaders are Gary Honeycutt, Gene Tomek, and Todd Klimas, 'CAFS' is a foam spraying machine or truck.

Suggestions from training May 22 2011

When leaving on severity, press button on radio say 'Alarm p-80 (or p-82 p-83)

Let them answer 'p-80'

Then say 'on severity patrol'

on return

'alarm p-80' Let them answer then say

p-80 in quarters and available'

p-80 Is the new one you can't see anything with the side mirrors

pumper

gas valve on

choke on

turn key cw

throttle pull out and turn

Suggestions from training may 22 2011

Carry color flagging in your gear

flag low power lines

make sure you have all your stuff before leaving truck, helmet, backpack, gloves, etc.

Is there gatorade and water in the trucks?

Is the road 4 wheel driveable?

Warm up gps while driving. It takes 5 minutes to find 3 satellites, so gps must have a clear view of sky for this to work.

Tell how many people went to fire, alarm (dispatch) wants to know LCES - lookout, communications ,escape route ,safety

Dispatchers Joyce Hyman, Susan Naugle Jan Pollock on alarm it's local 80

Pictures of intersections, houses, on maps.

Tell some one how you got there (to the incident)

flag as you go

how to get water tender access

pumper instructions on each truck

Is there more than 1 access route?

Teams should adopt a truck for maintenance

Text messaging on cellphones

Before Severity check-start pump, is there water in the tank, gas in chainsaw?

in slurry bombings, roll up vehicle windows and close doors

Ask people to stand and direct traffic on calls

leave truck running

ISO- insurance services office, if they ask we're a full service or structure department

From Roger's meeting with the other fire depts.

Go through alarm to order air support, is air support appropriate (near houses)

State land boss is Jim Downey

SEAT single engine air attack

There are 3 engines here 3 more in district, 1 copter

1 hvy tanker plane in area

Fire train july 2 2011

Motor oil is in white storage cabinet, synthetic oil works on both gas and diesel engines.

Make sure you plug in the battery charger and chock the tires when you are through with it.

Fill the water tanks with water if you used any.

On the p-8- theres a pushbutton on the end of the gear shift for 'Tow Mode' this should always be on, it's like a low gear, a light on the dash will appear if it's on.

On medical calls, get some rubber gloves out of Rescue-81, better have a couple of pairs in your gear.

Wipe the truck down after use.

Enter truck maintenance notes in the station log.

I was reading the fireline handbook, and I realized there's no way to keep fire trucks (or any other vehicles) from driving over our septic tank, this is a possibility, especially on a night fire, have to put some boulders around it.

Another handy tip: don't park under power lines

There's a really bad 50-yd stretch of road on Sheldon loop just uphill from Grasshopper lane. I guess the 3 houses below come up one end and the 15 above come in the other end.

Helicopter landings

1. Set the red landing lights

2. Wet down the landing site to prevent dust storms.

3. Remove banners that might be blown off, like the red flag.

4. Keep area across from fire station clear.

5. Area near the pump house will be used to stage the ambulance

6. Block traffic at Sunday School Road

7. Block traffic at Hummingbird Hill

8. Block traffic at Renegade Road.

9. Block intersection across from station

10. Shut firehouse doors

11. Communications will be on mutual aid channel

12. Head gear will be helmet with chin strap and no baseball caps allowed, they can get sucked into the rotor. Also no blankets, etc than can get sucked into the rotor.

13. Approach helicopter from the front. Never from the rear. This is only done when the pilot motions you to come up to the aircraft

14. Possible landing site in Potato Patch is N34 degrees 25.969 by W 1112 degrees 24.939 (the park?)

15. Back away bystanders

16. Wear goggles.

About the Rupert fire-

None of the vehicles could get up there.

Carry up the heavy stuff, like the chainsaws when you are fresh.

Use smaller hose going up hill.

Turn off your helmet light if you don't need it.
